Ikea - it's like Christmas for adults

After a lazy morning of bagels, coffee and Bewitched, we decided that we should do something with our Saturday. Should we go on a photo-taking trip? Yeah! Oh, wait, we live in Ireland and the sun that was shining for the past minute as we discussed this plan has just disappeared. How about a movie? Yeah! Oh, wait, there's nothing on that we want to see. Humm. "I know," said Joseph, "let's go to Ikea!" Yeah, yeah yeah! "But, wait," I said, "is this a sponTANeous plan?"
Let me explain - we have had some very bad experiences with spontaneous Saturday plans before. Namely, we get a great idea but either the weather, or the infrastructure, or timing gets in the way and we end up getting cranky with each other because one of our weekend days has been taken up with waiting for a bus, in the rain, for a very long time.
So, it was with some trepidation that we went to Ikea (the traffic! the crowds! the kitchen section!) but it turned out to be a highly enjoyable and productive trip. We got lots of things in the home organization section, which can only mean one thing: that our lives will now run smoothly, in a calm and well-ogranized fashion. Every adult's dream.

A suburban birthday

Photo: DreamWorks Pictures

I turned 30 yesterday. I celebrated by watching copious amounts of daytime TV, shopping and trying on clothes that I remember wearing the first time they were in (I'm talking to you, shoulder pads!), having dinner at a chain restaurant, drinking a potent cocktail, and attending a volunteer staff meeting, by mistake. All-in-all, a fantasy suburban birthday.

On patience and practice

Before I took this photograph, I had spent approximately six hours of my life wasting perfectly good film on over seventy really bad photographs.

Where I used to live

I used to live in Louisiana and it looked a lot like this:

But, I usually didn't have to go to a hot house like this to see it!

Thanks, Botanic Gardens for a lovely trip down memory lane, minus the sweat-rolling heat, mosquitoes, and terrific thunderstorms.

P.S. I would like to have a garden with these flowers in it one day:

Shredded courgettes = quasadilla magic
Salsa and chilled cucumber soup add a nice touch, too.

Pizza on the rocks

What's better than cold pizza for breakfast? Cold pizza for lunch on the beach!
